Workshop Content

Lesson 1: Visual Storytelling in Animation

  • The core difference between traditional script writing and animation writing

     

  • The concept of “visual writing.”

     

  • Show vs. tell in animation

     

  • Types of storytelling used in animation

     

  • How timing, pacing, and visual beats shape animation scripts

     

  • The importance of simplicity and clarity in animated storytelling

    • Introduction to scene breakdown for animation

       

    • Basic formatting approach for animation scripts

       

    • Understanding target audience (kids, teens, adult animation)

       

    In-Session Practice:

    Transforming a simple written paragraph into an animation-style scene

    Assignment 1:

    Write a short animated scene (1–2 minutes) applying visual storytelling principles

  • How to analyze animated films as a writer (not just as a viewer)

  • Breaking down:

    • Opening hook

    • Character goal

    • Conflict

    • Emotional arc

    • Visual storytelling choices

  • Identifying patterns in successful animation narratives

  • Extracting structure from films without copying

Idea Generation Module:

  • How to generate animation ideas from:

    • Everyday observations

    • “What if?” questions

    • Character-first concepts

    • Theme-based thinking

  • Turning abstract ideas into workable story premises

  • Writing a strong logline

Film scene breakdown + logline workshop

Assignment 2:

Develop an original animation concept, including:

  • Logline

  • Main character description

  • Core conflict

Character Development:

  • Building a protagonist with:

    • Clear goal

    • Internal flaw

    • Motivation

    • Emotional stakes

  • Creating compelling antagonistic forces

  • Writing character voice for animation

  • Writing expressive animated dialogue

World Building:

  • Creating a believable world (even in fantasy settings)

  • Establishing the rules of the world

  • Using the environment to support the story

  • Visual logic in animation

In-Session Practice:

Character development workshop

Assignment 3:

Submit a structured outline of the full animation project, including:

  • Logline

  • Character breakdown

  • World description

  • Story structure (Beginning – Middle – End)

This session is fully dedicated to:

  • Professional feedback

Each participant will present their animation story project (a short-film concept or an episode structure).
